Some Medicare plans work everywhere you go. Others leave you paying full price in Florida.
“Every plan on the market was built with a weakness.”
Medicare salespeople won’t tell you which one you’re in. I will. Every plan — Medicare Advantage, Medigap, Part D — was designed with trade-offs. A $0 premium plan isn’t free. A plan with a big name on the card isn’t necessarily the best plan in your county. The weakness isn’t in the brochure. It shows up when you need the plan to actually work.
According to Robert Simm, a licensed broker at GenerationHealth, Original Medicare with Medigap works everywhere in the US. Most Medicare Advantage plans only cover emergencies outside their network area. If you spend months in Florida or Arizona, that's the difference between $283 in out-of-pocket costs versus thousands in non-network charges.
Here's what most people don't realize: Medicare Advantage plans that look great in North Carolina can leave you completely exposed when you're visiting grandchildren in Texas or spending winter in Florida. I've seen folks get hit with $8,000 hospital bills because they thought "Medicare is Medicare everywhere."
That's exactly the conversation I have with every client who mentions travel. Let's make sure you understand exactly what your coverage looks like 500 miles from home. Call me at 828-761-3326 and we'll walk through your specific travel patterns.

“Are you actually sure you understand what you’re signing up for?”
Most people turning 65 get buried in Medicare mail, carrier calls, and TV ads — all saying the same thing. Nobody’s sitting down with you and walking through what your plan actually covers, what it doesn’t, and what it costs when something goes wrong. That’s the conversation that’s missing.
This is where the difference between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare becomes crystal clear. Emergency care is covered everywhere with both options. But what about that cough that won't go away while you're in Arizona? The blood pressure check while visiting family in Georgia?
Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks. Outside that network, you could pay full price for routine care. Original Medicare with a Medigap plan works at any doctor who accepts Medicare — which is about 93% of all physicians nationwide.
I always ask clients: "How many weeks per year are you away from North Carolina?" If it's more than 8-10 weeks, especially if you have ongoing health needs, Original Medicare with Medigap usually makes more financial sense. The peace of mind alone is worth the premium difference for most folks.
“Do you know what your plan’s weakness is?”
Every plan on the market was built with one. The $0 premium, the low monthly cost — those numbers look great until something goes wrong. Most people never find the weakness in their plan. They find it when they need the plan to work.
Here's something that catches people off guard: Medicare Part D prescription coverage can vary dramatically when you're traveling. Some Medicare Advantage plans have preferred pharmacy networks that don't extend nationwide. Others require prior authorization that can be difficult to navigate from out of state.
Original Medicare Part D plans generally work at chain pharmacies everywhere. But even then, you want to verify your specific medications are covered at the same copay level no matter where you fill them.
Call your plan before you travel with a list of your medications and ask about pharmacy networks in your destination area. With Medicare Advantage, also ask about urgent care copays and whether you need referrals for specialists while traveling.

Your PCP visit is $0. Your blood work is $0. Then you have a cardiac event. A cancer diagnosis. A surgery that requires a specialist who isn’t in your network. Now you’re looking at an out-of-pocket maximum that can run as high as $9,850 in 2027, prior authorization delays, and a facility bill you didn’t expect. The $0 premium plan isn’t free — you’ll find that out the hard way, or you won’t.
Here are three actual situations from clients who called me after learning the hard way about Medicare travel coverage:
Margaret from Durham spent four months each winter in Naples, Florida. Her Medicare Advantage plan looked great — $0 premium, $15 primary care copays in North Carolina. She needed her quarterly diabetes checkup while in Florida and saw an available doctor.
The clinic wasn't in her plan's network. The visit, lab work, and medication adjustments cost her $3,200 out of pocket. With Original Medicare and Medigap, the same care would have been covered at 100% after her $283 (2026 figure) annual deductible.
Tom and Linda from Wake County spend six months each year traveling in their RV. They chose Original Medicare with a standalone Part D plan specifically because they needed prescription coverage that worked everywhere — from Montana to Maine.
Their heart medications, diabetes supplies, and blood pressure prescriptions are available at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart locations nationwide at the same copay. No prior authorizations, no network restrictions, no surprises.
James from Orange County flew to Dallas for a family emergency and had chest pains. The ER visit was covered by his Medicare Advantage plan as an emergency. But when he needed cardiology follow-up during his extended stay, those specialists weren't in network.
He ended up flying back to North Carolina for care he could have received in Texas with Original Medicare. The additional flights and delay in treatment added stress to an already difficult situation.
“What happens if you’re on the wrong plan when something serious comes up?”
Nothing — until it does. A diagnosis. A surgery. A specialist that isn’t covered. That’s when the affordable plan starts costing you thousands. And by the time you find out, the enrollment window is usually closed. That’s not a hypothetical — that’s what happens to people every year in North Carolina.

“What if you could see exactly what your plan costs before you ever needed it?”
Not just the premium. The total — doctors verified, drugs priced, out-of-pocket maximum calculated. That’s how this decision should be made. Most people never get shown their plan this way. When you do, the right choice becomes obvious. That’s exactly what I do in a free 20-minute review.
| Coverage Type | Best For | Travel Coverage | Typical Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medicare Advantage | Home-based, occasional travel | Emergency only outside network | $0-$100/month |
| Original Medicare + Medigap | Frequent travelers, snowbirds | Full coverage nationwide | $150-$350/month |
| Original Medicare only | Very healthy, budget-conscious | 20% coinsurance everywhere | $202.90 (Part B only) |
The Medicare.gov plan finder doesn't clearly highlight network restrictions for travelers. Many plans show as "available" in other states but only cover emergency services. Always verify coverage for routine care in your destination areas before enrollment.
Here's how I help clients think through this decision: If you spend more than two months per year away from North Carolina, and especially if you have ongoing health conditions, Original Medicare with Medigap usually provides better value and peace of mind.
If you travel occasionally — maybe two weeks in Florida, a long weekend visiting family — Medicare Advantage can work well and save you money on premiums. The key is matching your plan to your actual lifestyle, not just your home address.

“Every plan I’ve ever reviewed has a weakness.”
Most people don’t know theirs until they need it most. Here’s what I do: I pull every plan available in your county, run your doctors and prescriptions through each one, and show you the total annual cost side by side — not just the monthly premium. One free call, 20 minutes. You leave knowing exactly which plan fits your life and exactly why. No pressure. No obligation. Just the full picture, finally.
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) works the same everywhere in the United States. Medicare Advantage plans vary significantly — many only provide full coverage within their network area, which may not extend beyond North Carolina or surrounding states. Always check network coverage for any area where you'll spend significant time.
Emergency coverage applies to urgent, life-threatening situations and is covered by all Medicare plans nationwide. Regular coverage includes routine doctor visits, prescription refills, lab work, and follow-up care. Medicare Advantage plans may not cover regular care outside their network area, while Original Medicare with Medigap covers both emergency and routine care everywhere.
You can change Medicare Advantage plans during Open Enrollment (October 15 - December 7) or switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare + Medigap during the first three months of the year. However, Medigap plans may require medical underwriting if you don't enroll during your initial eligibility period. Call Rob at 828-761-3326 to discuss your specific situation.
Original Medicare with Medigap typically costs $150-$350 more per month in premiums compared to many Medicare Advantage plans. However, for frequent travelers, this premium difference is often offset by avoiding out-of-network costs. One out-of-network hospital stay could cost thousands, making the extra premium worthwhile for many people.
Before traveling, verify that your Medicare Part D plan covers your medications at pharmacies in your destination area. Bring extra medication when possible, and know which pharmacy chains are in your plan's network. Some Medicare Advantage plans have limited pharmacy networks that don't extend nationwide, while most standalone Part D plans work at major chains everywhere.
While there aren't plans specifically labeled "for travelers," Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement is essentially designed for this lifestyle. It provides consistent coverage and costs nationwide. Some Medicare Advantage plans have broader networks that may work well for travelers, but you need to verify coverage in each area where you'll spend time. I can help you identify which specific plans work best for your travel patterns.
“What would it mean to make this decision knowing exactly where you stand?”
No stack of mail. No guessing. No finding out later that your plan has a gap you didn’t know about. Here’s what I do: I pull every plan available in your county, run your doctors and drugs through each one, and show you the total annual cost side by side. One call, 20 minutes, no obligation. You leave knowing exactly what to do — and exactly why.
