I'm turning 65 and live in Buncombe County NC — how do I enroll in Medicare and what do I need to know?
Real numbers. Real Buncombe County context.
Answered by Robert Simm, a Licensed Health Insurance Broker in North Carolina.
I answer my own phone in March. A call center hands you a different agent every year — I’m the same broker who set up your plan, and I’m who you call when a claim gets denied.
What does the data actually show for this Medicare question?
| Window | When | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) | 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after your 65th birthday | Enroll in Part A, Part B, MA, Part D, or Medigap |
| Medigap Open Enrollment | 6 months starting the month Part B begins | Buy any Medigap plan with no medical underwriting |
| Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) | Oct 15 – Dec 7 every year | Switch MA, switch Part D, or move from MA back to Original Medicare |
| MA Open Enrollment Period | Jan 1 – Mar 31 | Switch MA plans or drop MA for Original Medicare + Part D |
| General Enrollment Period (GEP) | Jan 1 – Mar 31 | Sign up for Part B if you missed your IEP — late penalty applies |
| Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) | Triggered by life events | Loss of employer coverage, move, qualify for Extra Help, etc. |
What are the 2026 Medicare numbers for Buncombe County residents?
What is Plan Match?
Three are specific to Buncombe County. Two apply to every NC resident. All five are fixable — if you catch them before enrollment.
What's the difference between doing it alone and working with an independent NC broker?
| What you need | Doing it alone | Robert Simm — NC #10447418 |
|---|---|---|
| Plans you can compare | Whatever Medicare.gov lists, no NC context | Every major NC carrier, filtered to your situation |
| Buncombe County network knowledge | Generic federal directories, often 6 months stale | Direct contract verification with each carrier |
| 2026 numbers applied to your budget | Generic rules — no IRMAA math, no spousal coordination | Run with your real income and household |
| Part D formulary check | Manual entry per drug, per plan | I pre-check every prescription on every eligible plan |
| Same person next year | Different agent every call | Same broker, same answer, every AEP |
| Cost | $0 (just your time and risk) | $0 — paid by carrier |
Which Mission Health facilities serve Buncombe County?
Mission Health is the health system on record for Buncombe County, and 3 facilities in the county carry its name — which does not mean they all sit on the same plan contracts.
- Mission Hospital
- Mission Children's Hospital
- CarePartners Rehabilitation Hospital
MISSION HEALTH NETWORK NOTES
Mission Hospital spent much of 2025 and early 2026 under CMS scrutiny, including an Immediate Jeopardy finding from a January 2026 inspection that put its Medicare and Medicaid provider agreements at risk. On 5 August 2026 CMS completed its review of the hospital's Enhanced Plan of Correction, found Mission in substantial compliance, and required no additional surveys. Mission's Medicare and Medicaid participation is intact. Verified .
This is a different kind of risk than a carrier dispute and it is worth understanding the difference. When a hospital leaves one insurer's network, switching plans solves it. A provider-agreement action is between the hospital and Medicare itself, so it reaches every plan at once — Advantage, Supplement and Original Medicare alike. Choosing a different carrier does not route around it. Verified .
Separately, Dogwood Health Trust has notified the North Carolina Attorney General that HCA may be in noncompliance with the 2025 Mission Hospital sale contract. That is a governance matter rather than a coverage one, but it is the backdrop to the CMS findings and it is why Buncombe County coverage decisions deserve a closer look this year than most. Does it matter which Medicare carrier you choose?
It doesn’t — because I get paid by the insurance carrier to manage your plan. Most call centers get paid more to steer your business toward certain carriers based on volume and contracts. The only thing I’m optimizing for is making sure you’re covered correctly when you actually need it. That’s what keeps people coming back. And referring their neighbors.
