Quick answer — North Carolina
I'm Rob Simm, independent Medicare broker NPN 10447418, licensed in North Carolina since 2010. I help NC residents navigate Medicare without the sales pressure of captive agents. For 2026, Part B costs $202.90 monthly with a $283 deductible, while Part A carries a $1,736 deductible. Medicare Advantage plans cap out-of-pocket costs at $9,350, and Part D caps prescription costs at $2,100 annually. Your Initial Enrollment Period spans 7 months around your 65th birthday.

What are most North Carolinians actually asking about Medicare in 2026?

The questions NC residents are actually asking when they search this.

01
Will my plan cover my current doctors?
Plans change networks every January. A plan that covered your doctor last year may not this year.
02
Will I get hit with a surprise out-of-network bill?
In-network hospital, out-of-network anesthesiologist. It happens constantly.
03
What if my medication moves to a higher tier?
Plans move drugs between tiers mid-year. Nobody warns you.
04
What if my plan drops my specialist?
Provider directories are 6 months out of date. I call to verify before you enroll.

Now that you see the numbers
Before you pick a plan — avoid these 5 mistakes.

Most costly Medicare mistakes I see North Carolina families make statewide. Three apply to specific NC situations. Two apply to every NC resident. All five are fixable — if you catch them before enrollment.

⚠ 5 mistakes North Carolina residents make with Medicare
Mistake 01 NC-specific
Choosing Blue Cross NC Medicare Advantage without checking Atrium Health network access.
Why it hurtsBlue Cross NC's Medicare HMO dropped several Atrium facilities for 2026. Your cardiologist at Atrium Health Pineville becomes out-of-network, forcing you to switch doctors mid-treatment or pay thousands out-of-pocket for continued care.
What to doVerify your doctors accept your specific plan before enrolling. Or call me — I'll verify while you wait.
Mistake 02 NC-specific
Assuming WakeMed accepts all Medicare Advantage plans because they take Original Medicare.
Why it hurtsSeveral 2026 Medicare Advantage plans exclude WakeMed entirely. You discover this when the $8,000 surgery bill arrives and your plan denies coverage as out-of-network, leaving you responsible for the full amount.
What to doCheck hospital networks separately from doctor networks. Many plans that cover your physician exclude the hospital where they practice.
Mistake 03 NC-specific
Enrolling in Humana Gold Plus HMO without verifying pharmacy coverage in rural NC.
Why it hurtsHumana's pharmacy network dropped many independent pharmacies across eastern NC for 2026. Your local pharmacy in Smithfield or Rocky Mount may no longer accept your plan, forcing 30-mile drives to CVS or Walgreens for prescriptions.
What to doConfirm your pharmacy accepts your specific plan, not just your insurer. Or call me — I know the North Carolina specifics cold.
Mistake 04 NC-wide
Missing the Part B late enrollment penalty if you’re working past 65.
Why it hurtsIf you don’t sign up for Part B during your Initial Enrollment Period and you don’t have qualifying employer coverage, you owe a 10% penalty for every 12 months you delayed — for the rest of your life. A 3-year delay = 30% higher Part B premium forever. I see this almost every AEP.
What to doIf you’re working past 65, get a Certification of Credible Coverage from your HR department before you stop work. It’s the document that protects you from the penalty.
Mistake 05 NC-wide
Missing your 6-month Medigap open enrollment window.
Why it hurtsYou have one 6-month window after you turn 65 and enroll in Part B to buy any Medigap plan without medical underwriting. Miss it, and insurers in NC can deny you coverage — or charge dramatically more — if you develop a health condition. This is the most catastrophic mistake on this list if you get sick after year 1.
What to doUnderstand your window the day you turn 65. Even if you pick Medicare Advantage now, know that the Medigap door closes 6 months later. Or call me — this is the single most expensive mistake I prevent for clients.

Now pick how you want to move forward — your pace.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose an independent broker over a captive insurance agent?
Independent brokers like me represent multiple carriers, not just one company. I can compare Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Blue Cross NC plans side-by-side to find your best fit, not just sell you what my employer requires.
What does NPN 10447418 mean for North Carolina residents?
My National Producer Number 10447418 verifies I'm licensed and regulated to sell Medicare in North Carolina. You can verify this license through the NC Department of Insurance to confirm I'm legitimate and authorized.
How much do independent Medicare brokers charge in NC?
I charge zero fees to Medicare beneficiaries. Insurance carriers pay my commission, so my services cost you nothing whether you buy a plan or not.
What's the penalty for late Medicare enrollment in 2026?
Part B penalties equal 10% of the premium for every 12 months you delay enrollment without creditable coverage. That's $20.29 monthly penalty for each year delayed, added permanently to your $202.90 base premium.
What do NC residents most commonly misunderstand about Medicare eligibility?
Many think Medicare automatically starts at 65. You must actively enroll during your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period. Miss it, and you'll pay the 10% annual penalty plus wait until January 1st for coverage to start during General Enrollment.
⚠ Penalty & Deadline Warning
If you delay Medicare Part B without creditable employer coverage, you’ll pay a 10% lifetime penalty for every 12 months you delayed — added to your Part B premium for the rest of your life. The 2026 standard Part B premium is $202.90/month, so a 24-month delay raises it to roughly $243/month, permanently. Your Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window: 3 months before your 65th birthday month, the birthday month itself, and 3 months after.
💡 Broker Tip · Provider Verification
Before you enroll in any Medicare Advantage plan, give me the names of every doctor you see — primary care, cardiologist, oncologist, endocrinologist — and I’ll call each one’s billing office directly to verify they accept the plan. Provider directories on Medicare.gov run 4–6 months stale, and “in-network” on the directory doesn’t always mean the provider is accepting new patients on that plan.

Does it matter which Medicare carrier you choose?

It doesn’t — because I get paid by the insurance carrier to manage your plan. Most call centers get paid more to steer your business toward certain carriers based on volume and contracts. The only thing I’m optimizing for is making sure you’re covered correctly when you actually need it. That’s what keeps people coming back. And referring their neighbors.
