Does WakeMed Accept Your Medicare Supplement Plan? Wake County Coverage Guide
Short answer: yes — WakeMed accepts every Medigap plan. The real question is which plan letter saves you the most in 2026.
Answered by Robert Simm, a Licensed Health Insurance Broker in North Carolina.
I track every Medigap rate filing in North Carolina. Medicare.gov shows you today’s price — it can’t tell you which carrier has raised rates three years running.
What confuses people about Medigap and hospital coverage?
These are the four questions I hear most from Wake County residents choosing between Medigap and Medicare Advantage.
You have exactly 6 months after turning 65 and enrolling in Part B to buy any Medigap plan with no health questions asked. Miss this window in North Carolina and insurers can deny you coverage or charge significantly higher premiums based on your health. This is the single most expensive Medicare mistake I see in Wake County. Call (828) 761-3326 to confirm your window dates.
What’s the real difference between Medigap and Medicare Advantage at WakeMed?
| What do you need to know? | Medicare Advantage | Medigap + Original Medicare |
|---|---|---|
| WakeMed coverage | Only if WakeMed is in your plan’s network — changes yearly | Always accepted — WakeMed takes Original Medicare |
| Specialist referrals | Often requires referral from primary care and prior authorization | No referrals needed — see any Medicare-accepting specialist directly |
| Out-of-pocket maximum | $9,250 in-network cap in 2026 — but out-of-network costs can be unlimited | Plan G: your only cost is $283 Part B deductible per year |
| Monthly premium | Many plans are $0 premium (but higher costs when you use care) | Plan G: typically $120–$250/mo in Wake County at age 65 |
| Drug coverage | Usually included in MA plan | Separate Part D plan required — 2026 OOP cap is $2,100 |
| Best for | Healthy, budget-conscious — comfortable with networks | Anyone who wants guaranteed WakeMed access with predictable costs |
What are the key Medicare costs for Wake County in 2026?
If you use WakeMed regularly — especially their heart, orthopedic, or cancer centers — Medigap Plan G gives you guaranteed access with no network surprises. Medicare Advantage plans rotate WakeMed in and out of their networks every January. I’ve seen Wake County clients lose WakeMed access mid-treatment because their MA plan dropped the hospital from its network at renewal. With Medigap, that can’t happen. Call (828) 761-3326 and I’ll compare every Medigap carrier’s rates for your age and zip code in under 10 minutes.

What happens when WakeMed drops out of your MA network?
How much does it cost to get help choosing between Medigap and Medicare Advantage?
It doesn’t — because I get paid by the insurance carrier to manage your plan. Most call centers get paid more to steer your business toward certain carriers based on volume and contracts. The only thing I’m optimizing for is making sure you’re covered correctly when you actually need it. That’s what keeps people coming back. And referring their neighbors.
Which WakeMed Health & Hospitals facilities serve Wake County?
WakeMed Health & Hospitals is the health system on record for Wake County, and 3 facilities in the county carry its name — which does not mean they all sit on the same plan contracts.
WakeMed publishes both what it takes and what it does not. In-network for 2026: AARP Medicare Advantage by UnitedHealthcare (HMO, POS, PPO), Aetna Medicare, Alignment Health, Blue Medicare, ExperienceHealth HMO, FirstMedicare Direct SmartHMO, Healthy Blue + Medicare D-SNP, Liberty Medicare Advantage, PruittHealth Premier and Wellcare. Not participating: HealthSpring (previously Cigna Medicare HMO), Humana Medicare HMO, and UnitedHealthcare HMO. Verified 2026-09-02.
Read the product name, not the carrier name. WakeMed lists AARP Medicare Advantage by UnitedHealthcare as in-network and UnitedHealthcare HMO as not participating. Both are UnitedHealthcare. A card saying UnitedHealthcare tells you nothing about WakeMed on its own. Verified 2026-09-02.
The question that costs you money at WakeMed is whether WakeMed itself is in your network — not whether every doctor inside it is. WakeMed states that professional fees from providers it does not employ, manage or own may not fall under the same insurance contracts and may bill separately, naming pathology, radiology, anaesthesiology and ambulatory surgery centres. In practice that means more bills and more phone numbers, not necessarily more cost: at an in-network facility the No Surprises Act caps those specialties at your in-network cost-sharing. Where it does bite is the facility itself — WakeMed is not participating with UnitedHealthcare HMO, HealthSpring or Humana Medicare HMO, and no federal protection covers that. Verified 2026-09-02.
Being out of network is not always a cost. WakeMed states that many employer-sponsored Group Medicare Advantage PPO retiree plans carry no out-of-network penalty, so those members pay the same out-of-pocket costs at WakeMed even where WakeMed is out of network with the plan administrator — including HealthSpring, Humana and UnitedHealthcare. Pre-authorisation may still be required. As a Medicare-participating system WakeMed accepts the CMS-allowed payment in full and bills no balance beyond the plan’s own copay, deductible and coinsurance. Verified 2026-09-02.
Two of WakeMed’s accepted Medicare Advantage plans carry restrictions on the face of the list: ExperienceHealth HMO excludes WakePET services, and FirstMedicare Direct SmartHMO is limited to Wake County residents. PruittHealth Premier applies only to its own enrollees and Wellcare only to North Carolina residents. Accepted does not mean unconditional. Verified 2026-09-02.
