Find Your Enrollment Situation

Medicare enrollment isn't one-size-fits-all. Your situation determines your deadlines, options, and risks. Find yours below.

Turning 65

Your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period is the most important window in Medicare. Enroll in Part A and Part B, choose between Medicare Advantage or Medigap + Part D, and don't miss the 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period (guaranteed issue, no health questions). Start comparing 3 months before your birthday.

Key 2026 costs: Part B $202.90/month, MA $0–$150/month, Medigap Plan G $116–$198/month at age 65, Part D $0–$90+/month.

Working Past 65

If your employer has 20+ employees and you have creditable coverage, you can delay Part B without penalty. Enroll within 8 months of leaving the job or losing coverage. Critical traps: COBRA is NOT creditable for Part B (your 8-month window starts when you leave the job, not when COBRA ends). Small employers (under 20): Medicare becomes primary β€” enroll in Part B at 65.

Missed Your Enrollment Window

If you missed your IEP without qualifying employer coverage, you face permanent penalties and may need to wait. The General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) lets you sign up for Part A and Part B, but coverage doesn't start until July 1 β€” leaving a gap. Penalties: Part B adds 10% of $202.90 per 12-month delay (permanent). Part D adds 1% of $38.99 per uncovered month (permanent).

Changing Plans During AEP (Oct 15 – Dec 7)

Every fall, you can switch MA plans, move between MA and Original Medicare, or change your Part D plan. Changes take effect January 1. We recommend reviewing every year β€” plans change formularies, networks, and premiums annually. In NC, some Part D plans saw $50/month premium increases from 2025 to 2026.

Moving to North Carolina

Moving triggers a Special Enrollment Period (typically 63 days). Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are county-specific β€” your current plan may not be available in your new NC county, and your doctors may not be in-network. You'll need to choose new coverage based on your new ZIP code.

We verify every provider by NPI number in your new county before recommending a plan. Call 828-761-3324 for a free comparison in your new county.

Qualifying for a Special Enrollment Period

Beyond moving, SEPs are triggered by: losing employer coverage, losing Medicaid, leaving a Medicare Advantage plan (MA OEP), gaining Extra Help/LIS status, plan violations, and other qualifying events. Each has different timelines. Don't assume you don't qualify β€” many people have SEP rights they don't know about.

Low Income β€” MSPs and Extra Help

If your income is limited, Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB, QI) can pay your Part B premium and auto-qualify you for Extra Help with drug costs. Combined savings: $5,000–$8,000/year. Qualifying for these programs also opens Special Enrollment Periods. Income limits for 2026: up to $1,816/month individual for QI.

πŸ’‘ Expert Tip from Rob Simm

The most common enrollment mistake I see isn't missing a deadline β€” it's not knowing you HAVE a deadline. People on COBRA think they have years. People with small-employer coverage think Medicare is secondary. People who moved assume their old plan still works. Every situation has a specific window and specific consequences for missing it. One call can clarify your exact situation.

What Enrollment Help Actually Looks Like

When you call us, here's what happens:

  • We identify your enrollment window β€” IEP, AEP, SEP, or GEP β€” and confirm your deadlines
  • We list your doctors and medications β€” names, NPI numbers, dosages
  • We compare every option β€” MA, Medigap, and Part D across all carriers in your NC county
  • We verify networks by NPI β€” not just hospital names, but individual doctors
  • We calculate total annual cost β€” premium + deductible + copays for your actual usage
  • We submit the application β€” correctly, on time, with no errors
  • We stay available after enrollment β€” same agent, year-round, for billing questions, claims issues, or plan changes

All of this costs you $0. Carriers pay us. Your premium is identical whether you use an agent or enroll on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Medicare enrollment help in North Carolina.
When do I enroll in Medicare?
IEP: 7 months around your 65th birthday. AEP: Oct 15–Dec 7 for plan changes. MA OEP: Jan 1–Mar 31 for MA changes. SEPs: triggered by qualifying events (moving, losing coverage, etc.).
What if I missed my enrollment deadline?
Permanent penalties: Part B +10% per 12-month delay, Part D +1% per uncovered month. GEP (Jan 1–Mar 31) lets you sign up, but coverage starts July 1. Check if you qualify for an SEP first.
Does enrollment help cost anything?
$0. Carriers pay agents. Your premium is the same with or without an agent. You get guidance, NPI network verification, and post-enrollment support β€” free.
Can I change plans outside open enrollment?
Only during AEP, MA OEP, or a qualifying SEP. Moving, losing employer coverage, gaining Medicaid, and other events trigger SEPs. Call to check if you qualify.
I'm moving to NC β€” what do I do?
Moving triggers a 63-day SEP. Your current plan may not work in your new county. We verify doctors by NPI in your new area and compare all available plans. Call 828-761-3324.
