Medicare Advantage Explained

What the plan brochures
don't tell you.

Every carrier markets their plan as the best. Here's what actually matters when you're comparing Medicare Advantage options in the Triangle.

🔀

HMO vs. PPO — Which Network Type?

Most Medicare Advantage plans in Wake and Durham counties are either HMO or PPO. An HMO typically costs less but requires you to stay in-network and get referrals for specialists. A PPO gives you more flexibility to see out-of-network providers, but at a higher cost. The right choice depends entirely on how you use healthcare — and which network your doctors actually belong to. We check that before recommending either type.

How Can a Plan Be $0 Premium?

It's one of the most common questions — and the skepticism is fair. Medicare Advantage plans receive funding from the federal government based on your county and health profile. That subsidy allows many carriers to offer $0-premium plans with built-in dental, vision, and hearing benefits. The trade-off is that you're using a provider network rather than having open access like Original Medicare. For people whose doctors are already in-network, it can be an excellent deal — but it's not right for everyone.

Already on MA — Should I Switch?

Plans change every year. Carriers adjust premiums, drop providers from networks, move drugs to higher cost tiers, and change copay structures — all without switching your plan for you. If you enrolled a year or two ago and haven't compared recently, you could be paying more for less. During the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) or the Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1 – Mar 31), you can switch to a better plan at no cost. We'll pull your current plan's latest details and compare it against every other option in your county.

Participating sales agencies represent Medicare Advantage [HMO, PPO, and PFFS] and stand-alone PDP prescription drug plans that have a Medicare contract. Enrollment depends on the plan's contract renewal. The Medicare plans represented are PDP, HMO, PPO, or PFFS plans with a Medicare contract.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) at 1-855-408-1212 (NC) to get information on all of your options.
